Revised 60 sec for final broadcast assignment

San Jose State University students began paying more and more for less and less in fall 2008. That's when the budget cuts started.

Students were dropped from classes, thousands couldn’t add classes, and seniors weren’t able to graduate on time. Students on a four-year track to graduate found it turning into a five-year track.

Earlier this month, local residents, faculty, and students gathered the San Jose State university campus along with other colleges, holding a two-hour rally protesting the budget cuts. Hundreds of people were yelling and screaming, holding up banners and protest posters, demanding change.

“I mean its ridiculous, where is my money going,” said Ashley Hall, a junior who feels that things need to go back to the way they were during fall 2007 when she began as a freshman.

Not only are the students undergoing classroom changes but the campus food court prices are going up as well. Everything has gone up about 10 percent this semester. “

The state budget proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger on January 10 reduces funding to the California State Universities by a total of 386.1 million. This reduction includes a direct cut $ 312.9 million and fails to fund $ 73.2 million necessary to avoid raising student fees by 10 percent for the 2008-2009 academic school year”, according to the San Jose State University fact sheet.

It also stated that “At the current rate of economic return, the proposed budget cuts to CSU would remove more than $ 1 billion from the states economy as California leaders grapple with an ongoing budget deficit. The cuts would mean larger class sizes, less student support, and less course sections, resulting in students taking longer to graduate”.

“They even charge for sour cream now," said Tashia Taylor. "I can’t even eat my Quesadilla how I use to because of the 75 cent increase.”

Students are unable to afford the cost because their money is being spent on tuition, rent, PG&E, gas, insurance, and other expenses. Many students were astonished this past semester with the Dinning Commons, which recently equipped their facility with three 37-inch television sets. Many are wondering how the university was able to make such big purchases.

With the economy in a recession, the government should be more understanding with the cost of education. Without the voices of local residents and students showing support on this months protest no one would have been able to voice their opinion.

60 Second Broadcast Script:

A few months ago, I went to the movies to see “I can do Bad all by myself”. After reviewing this movie I have come to realization that the world we live in is to short to be stubborn and selfish. We all have lives of our own, that at times can bring stress and struggle; that doesn’t mean that you have to be mad at the world. April was undergoing many issues in her life that categorized her as someone who is selfish, stubborn and inconsiderate. She wanted everything to go her way, and she never wanted to be there for others. She had too many expectations but could never meet them personally. After her mother died, she had to begin a new life for herself as well as eventually uphold the title of being a parent. Even though she hated the fact that she had to do this, she had to put all grudges, and hate aside to assure she could uphold the challenge of change. After dealing with so many things, faith, courage, and strength helped April to become a better person for herself and her new aspiring family. Don’t take life for granted, because you never know what can happen to you, or the outcome your life has stored for you.

Magazine-Style piece:

In life you come across all types of different people. Some people are nice, some people are mean and some are just stubborn. Tyler Perry movie “I can do Bad all by myself” depicted a story of a woman named April. She was stubborn and selfish not only to herself, but to others that was in her life. She was very unhappy with her life and the things that were happening to her. She was an alcoholic and used alcohol to succumb hurt and pain.

She made a living from living off of her boyfriend Raymond, and singing at a local bar in her community, which contributed to her alcoholism. After her father passed away, she was left with a house that belongs to him. She lived her own life and didn’t want to be bothered much at all. Her older sister passed away from doing drugs, leaving their mother to raise her children, all three of them.

One night, April’s niece and nephews were caught looting in Madea’s home. She took them to April’s house, since the children’s grandmother had not been around in a few days. When they arrived around 2:00 p.m. April was sleeping and angry that they had woken her up. She didn’t even want them to come in her house. “They aint my kids, where yall granny at”, she said. She was very hesitant, but eventually let the kids in. She was rude to them, and didn’t care about the youngest illness and repeatedly smoked around him knowing that he couldn’t be around second hand smoke “This is my house,”. She opened her home with kindness to the children until they could get in contact with her mother. She also let a Mexican immigrant, looking for work stay in her house when the church pastor asked if she could do so.

After she allowed this he began to challenge her to open her heart, especially when she found out that her mother had died on the bus on her way to work previous weeks ago. When more negative things started happening to April, she began to reevaluate her perspectives on life. Since her mother passed away the children’s only option was going to be separated and put into foster homes, if April didn’t let them stay with her. She told them “I can’t take care of you guys; the foster homes will send you to nice families”. Leaving these children to be homeless and helpless, it was nothing they could do to change her mind. Until she found out that her boyfriend, Raymond, was trying to rape her 16-year-old niece. This caused there relationship to end, and brought a sense of hope and faith back into the lives of the young ones.

April eventually realized that if she let the kids go to foster homes her life wouldn’t get any better. She allowed them stay, and she built better relationships with them as well as with the immigrant living in her house. They got married. Faith, courage and strength were the roots of this movie because without it, you won’t be able to survive in this world.

Extra Credit Assignment

Rashida Gilmore
Extra Credit
On March 3, 2010, I attended an on-campus event discussing the San Francisco Panorama. The Panorama is a newspaper that was discovered in San Francisco, Ca, by three young gentlemen by the names of Justin, Byron, and Chris. When these three men began working on the Panorama they were equipped with no experience at all. Allowing themselves to learn and grow to become the entrepreneur’s they are today. With creativity, time, and effort they were able to create 320 pages of original content, 112 page broadcast (printed in full color), 112 page magazine, a 96 page book section, and pull out posters.

Neither one of the guys had prior experience, which is why this magazine company is so unique. Being able to create such a huge successful magazine shows how determined they were and still are. Being able to fit all types of lifestyles into a magazine was a wonderful idea. Not only can people read this magazine and read about what’s going on in the world , they can also find leisure when they purchase this very different type if newspaper. Everyone, especially I, love to do crossword puzzles, or read funny comics, see the latest fashion, get the latest news on sports, or even learn new recipes, which can eventually lead up to more. What makes this magazine so much better than other magazine companies is that they have very large print, and very big photographs to make everything that much clearer.

These creative workers don’t work in big offices, but they use the space they can, to come up with many ideas to broadcast over their paper. They use “Big white boards”, “Long tables” and manage from there on. They knew they wanted something, so they worked hard to get it. When their newspaper was first published they said, “We were so excited, we had t-shirts made, took thousands of pictures, because we finally accomplished something we worked so hard on”. “Seeing our newspaper out on the stands was amazing, on the top self there it stood”. Creativity will take you far in life and I personally think that it was a wonderful presentation on reimaging the future of media.

Pete Stenhoff, 18, rammed his head into the ball carriers chest, cracking the vertebrate in his spine during a football game.

There are 20,000 injuries in high school football each year- 12 percent of them are permanently disabled victims. Thirty five percent of the injuries are to the neck or head. Most critics blame the helmet.

Pete attended Chula Vista High School in Redmond, Calif. At the time of the incident Pete weighed 210 pounds; now he weighs 172 pounds and confined to a wheel chair.

After such tragedy, he is not bitter. “I knew the risks involved when I decided to play football” he says, and adds, “I wish I would have known just how bad it could be”.
