Revised 60 sec for final broadcast assignment

San Jose State University students began paying more and more for less and less in fall 2008. That's when the budget cuts started.

Students were dropped from classes, thousands couldn’t add classes, and seniors weren’t able to graduate on time. Students on a four-year track to graduate found it turning into a five-year track.

Earlier this month, local residents, faculty, and students gathered the San Jose State university campus along with other colleges, holding a two-hour rally protesting the budget cuts. Hundreds of people were yelling and screaming, holding up banners and protest posters, demanding change.

“I mean its ridiculous, where is my money going,” said Ashley Hall, a junior who feels that things need to go back to the way they were during fall 2007 when she began as a freshman.

Not only are the students undergoing classroom changes but the campus food court prices are going up as well. Everything has gone up about 10 percent this semester. “

The state budget proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger on January 10 reduces funding to the California State Universities by a total of 386.1 million. This reduction includes a direct cut $ 312.9 million and fails to fund $ 73.2 million necessary to avoid raising student fees by 10 percent for the 2008-2009 academic school year”, according to the San Jose State University fact sheet.

It also stated that “At the current rate of economic return, the proposed budget cuts to CSU would remove more than $ 1 billion from the states economy as California leaders grapple with an ongoing budget deficit. The cuts would mean larger class sizes, less student support, and less course sections, resulting in students taking longer to graduate”.

“They even charge for sour cream now," said Tashia Taylor. "I can’t even eat my Quesadilla how I use to because of the 75 cent increase.”

Students are unable to afford the cost because their money is being spent on tuition, rent, PG&E, gas, insurance, and other expenses. Many students were astonished this past semester with the Dinning Commons, which recently equipped their facility with three 37-inch television sets. Many are wondering how the university was able to make such big purchases.

With the economy in a recession, the government should be more understanding with the cost of education. Without the voices of local residents and students showing support on this months protest no one would have been able to voice their opinion.

60 Second Broadcast Script:

A few months ago, I went to the movies to see “I can do Bad all by myself”. After reviewing this movie I have come to realization that the world we live in is to short to be stubborn and selfish. We all have lives of our own, that at times can bring stress and struggle; that doesn’t mean that you have to be mad at the world. April was undergoing many issues in her life that categorized her as someone who is selfish, stubborn and inconsiderate. She wanted everything to go her way, and she never wanted to be there for others. She had too many expectations but could never meet them personally. After her mother died, she had to begin a new life for herself as well as eventually uphold the title of being a parent. Even though she hated the fact that she had to do this, she had to put all grudges, and hate aside to assure she could uphold the challenge of change. After dealing with so many things, faith, courage, and strength helped April to become a better person for herself and her new aspiring family. Don’t take life for granted, because you never know what can happen to you, or the outcome your life has stored for you.

Magazine-Style piece:

In life you come across all types of different people. Some people are nice, some people are mean and some are just stubborn. Tyler Perry movie “I can do Bad all by myself” depicted a story of a woman named April. She was stubborn and selfish not only to herself, but to others that was in her life. She was very unhappy with her life and the things that were happening to her. She was an alcoholic and used alcohol to succumb hurt and pain.

She made a living from living off of her boyfriend Raymond, and singing at a local bar in her community, which contributed to her alcoholism. After her father passed away, she was left with a house that belongs to him. She lived her own life and didn’t want to be bothered much at all. Her older sister passed away from doing drugs, leaving their mother to raise her children, all three of them.

One night, April’s niece and nephews were caught looting in Madea’s home. She took them to April’s house, since the children’s grandmother had not been around in a few days. When they arrived around 2:00 p.m. April was sleeping and angry that they had woken her up. She didn’t even want them to come in her house. “They aint my kids, where yall granny at”, she said. She was very hesitant, but eventually let the kids in. She was rude to them, and didn’t care about the youngest illness and repeatedly smoked around him knowing that he couldn’t be around second hand smoke “This is my house,”. She opened her home with kindness to the children until they could get in contact with her mother. She also let a Mexican immigrant, looking for work stay in her house when the church pastor asked if she could do so.

After she allowed this he began to challenge her to open her heart, especially when she found out that her mother had died on the bus on her way to work previous weeks ago. When more negative things started happening to April, she began to reevaluate her perspectives on life. Since her mother passed away the children’s only option was going to be separated and put into foster homes, if April didn’t let them stay with her. She told them “I can’t take care of you guys; the foster homes will send you to nice families”. Leaving these children to be homeless and helpless, it was nothing they could do to change her mind. Until she found out that her boyfriend, Raymond, was trying to rape her 16-year-old niece. This caused there relationship to end, and brought a sense of hope and faith back into the lives of the young ones.

April eventually realized that if she let the kids go to foster homes her life wouldn’t get any better. She allowed them stay, and she built better relationships with them as well as with the immigrant living in her house. They got married. Faith, courage and strength were the roots of this movie because without it, you won’t be able to survive in this world.

Extra Credit Assignment

Rashida Gilmore
Extra Credit
On March 3, 2010, I attended an on-campus event discussing the San Francisco Panorama. The Panorama is a newspaper that was discovered in San Francisco, Ca, by three young gentlemen by the names of Justin, Byron, and Chris. When these three men began working on the Panorama they were equipped with no experience at all. Allowing themselves to learn and grow to become the entrepreneur’s they are today. With creativity, time, and effort they were able to create 320 pages of original content, 112 page broadcast (printed in full color), 112 page magazine, a 96 page book section, and pull out posters.

Neither one of the guys had prior experience, which is why this magazine company is so unique. Being able to create such a huge successful magazine shows how determined they were and still are. Being able to fit all types of lifestyles into a magazine was a wonderful idea. Not only can people read this magazine and read about what’s going on in the world , they can also find leisure when they purchase this very different type if newspaper. Everyone, especially I, love to do crossword puzzles, or read funny comics, see the latest fashion, get the latest news on sports, or even learn new recipes, which can eventually lead up to more. What makes this magazine so much better than other magazine companies is that they have very large print, and very big photographs to make everything that much clearer.

These creative workers don’t work in big offices, but they use the space they can, to come up with many ideas to broadcast over their paper. They use “Big white boards”, “Long tables” and manage from there on. They knew they wanted something, so they worked hard to get it. When their newspaper was first published they said, “We were so excited, we had t-shirts made, took thousands of pictures, because we finally accomplished something we worked so hard on”. “Seeing our newspaper out on the stands was amazing, on the top self there it stood”. Creativity will take you far in life and I personally think that it was a wonderful presentation on reimaging the future of media.

Pete Stenhoff, 18, rammed his head into the ball carriers chest, cracking the vertebrate in his spine during a football game.

There are 20,000 injuries in high school football each year- 12 percent of them are permanently disabled victims. Thirty five percent of the injuries are to the neck or head. Most critics blame the helmet.

Pete attended Chula Vista High School in Redmond, Calif. At the time of the incident Pete weighed 210 pounds; now he weighs 172 pounds and confined to a wheel chair.

After such tragedy, he is not bitter. “I knew the risks involved when I decided to play football” he says, and adds, “I wish I would have known just how bad it could be”.

Topical Blog Post:Event

On April 17, 2010 I attended a local community gathering: “The 6th annual Quality of Life Conference” here in San Jose, Ca. It was located at the African American Community Center, a few blocks away from San Jose State University. Workshops began around 9:30a.m. and ended at 2:00p.m. Throughout the day I was filled with valuable information that can help me in the future. Topics that were discussed were ways to prevent cancer, and other illnesses, ways to stay in shape, how to eat healthy, as well as ways to keep your teeth. Each guest speaker was vey well-educated and possessed wonderful careers. Many people are unaware that there are ways to prevent deadly diseases like cancer, and diabetes, the workshop that was given, allowed us listeners to learn ways to avoid these diseases from happening to us.

It all starts with the way we eat; if we learn to eat healthier we can prevent cancer. Berries, strawberries, walnuts, broccoli, brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes are examples of the different foods you can begin to eat for a healthier diet. Exercise was a topic discussed along with many others. Staying in shape is good overall. Simple stretches can get the job done, jogging, and even dancing are ways that can help you stay in shape and ways to help limit gaining excess fat. A 10 minute work out before you go to sleep or when you wake up can put you on the path of beginning a new exciting life.

Libel Exercise

Libel exercise

A sophomore at Springfield University claims a chemistry professor has sexually harassed her.

Karen Hart, 123 Hill Hall, says the professor, George O.T. Jungle, has touched her during tutoring sessions in his office and has invited her to his apartment several times. She said she declined his invitations. (This passage is libelous; you only have one side of the story. She has accused him, but has no evidence that he did anything to her, and we haven’t heard his side of the story, and you can omit 123 Hill Hall)

“I am having trouble in the class and I have to go see him to get help with my papers and projects,” Hart Said. “But I am scared to go in his office now.”

Jungle denied having an improper contact with the student and threatened this newspaper with a libel suit if it published the story.

Hart said she is thinking of filing a formal complaint with the university. (Since she hasn’t already filed the complaint, there is absolutely no evidence against the professor for sexual harassment.)

“I don’t know how to do that,” she said. “I don’t know what to do”.

After reading this news story draft, I don’t think it’s a good idea for this to be printed in the University paper. Even though the idea of sexual harassment isn’t what you expect to hear, and shouldn’t be tolerated, Karen has no valuable evidence of professor Jungle ever harassing her. Until Karen finally decides to file a claim against the professor, everything she says will be viewed as false; therefore she can be sued for libel by Jungle.

Ethics Questions and Answers

Scenario 1

Due to the circumstances I would take a look at the document on the desk. I feel that if the document involves me, why shouldn’t I see what type of investigation there doing on me? Not only would I read them, but if I am unsure of what I saw I would then confront her about the situation and get to bottom of the case.

Scenario 2

I would want to do it so that I can figure out why the nursing home is substandard. Being that everything isn’t in its place the research that I would uncover could simply be the answer to the problem the nursing home is currently facing. Since the facility isn’t being run the way it should, of course the experiences being there should and will be reported.

Scenario 3

You cannot under any circumstance use quotes as your own if they were written by another source. You have to quote and cite all the information given or face perjury. Which I’m sure I wouldn’t want to go through. Even if you get quotes from an online website, YOU still have to cite you sources.

Commentary

This weekend I watched Tyler Perry’s film “Why Did I Get Married Too?” I walked out that theatre with tears rolling down my face. If people are constantly wondering why they got married then they shouldn’t be together in the beginning. Hardworking wives and husbands spend so much time arguing about nonsense and avoidable situations that they fail to realize these are the simple acts of wanting a divorce.

Trust was the key factor in this movie and allowed viewers to understand that in order to have a successful relationship you have to be able to trust your significant other no matter what. Dealing with all that comes with marriage these families that were strong at first steadily began to fall apart. Spouses that tend to want more out of the relationship without putting effort into it shouldn’t be able to get what they want. As many know divorces are always a rocky situation, and with humans being so stubborn, it’s no wonder why this film eventually brought real life stories to the big screen.

The most emotional, heartfelt scene had to be Janet Jackson’s outburst. I commend her for this scene because it brought tears to my eyes and made me realize why I won’t be getting married anytime soon. “Pure love will never return to you void”.

Math for Journalist

A local college releases figures showing that its total budget is $120 million. Of that total, $80 million comes from the state, $6 million from student tuition, and the remaining $34 million from fees, grants and gifts.
* Figure the percentage of the college’s budget that comes from each source –
· 67 percent comes from the state
· 5 percent from student tuition
· 28 percent is from fees, grants and gifts.
* Identify the significance of each funding source (the most vs. the least, etc.) –
· The most funding comes from the state
* Using plain words, instead of numbers, explain the proportion of funding that comes from different sources. Say it in the way you think would make it most easily understood –
· Most of college’s funding is given by state, while the rest is supplied from fees, grants, and gifts, as well as from tuition.

He gives you the following figures from an anti-crime group that is lobbying for tougher sentencing guidelines. The cases represent the people convicted for aggravated assault in San Jose in one month in 2006.
* Calculate the average prison term for people convicted of aggravated assault, taking care to convert some of the terms to figures that will compare properly (months vs. years) –
· The average prison term for people convicted of aggravated assault for 22 months.
* Calculate the median prison term for people convicted of aggravated assault –
· The median prison term for convicted of aggravated assault is for one year.
* Explain why the average or median figure is the most accurate description of prison terms – The median is the simplest way to show information.
3) The state legislature is considering exempting restaurant food sales from the sales tax in the same way grocery sales are exempt.
* First, find out the state sales tax –
· California state tax is 8.25%
* Then determine and explain how much fast-food patrons who pay $5 per meal would save in a year if they eat out once a week –
· Every meal would cost $5 to $4.59 (8.25% off of $5), for a difference of 41 cents per meal. The prices decrease by 41 cents over 52 weeks which would allow you to save about $21.32 every year.
· Explain how much people would save if they spend $20 per meal once a week for a year – After calculations people would save $85.80 a year.

Fact set 2

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a fire to set off an alarm.

A birthday party was thrown by the First United Methodist Church women’s group to celebrate Mabel McCullough of Tulsa, Okla. 95th birthday. When it was time to cut the cake lit with 95 candles McCullough, with help, blew all the candles out creating a cloud of smoke setting off the alarm.

One of the guest Eddi Carlin said, “There wasn’t an inch to spare by the time we had them all lit, it looked liked a torch”. “We had just sat down to eat when we saw them in the doorway”. She’s referring to the 24 firefighters, who arrived in five engines and two ladder companies.

“In my 23 years on the job, I’ve seen a lot of things set off a fire alarm, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one going off because of a birthday cake” said Fire Chief Lonnie Lamb. Though the fire fighters didn’t stay for cake, they did take photos with McCullough.

News Story # 5

Spilled apples blocked the northbound lanes of a highway, after a truck hauling apples lost control.

A trucker was hauling apples from Marysville to Sebastopol, and lost control of his tractor this morning around 8:30 a.m. The tractor was connected to two flatbed trailers that held 24 full apple containers. Robert Urbins, 55, from French Camp, Calif., said that the flatbed began “whipping” and scattering apples; he was driving at 55 mph.

The mess severely impacted the morning commute. When the accident happened, there was a mist in the air that made the roads rather slick, which added to the hazard after the apples spilled.

California Highway Patrol officer Wayne Ziese said that road crews had blocked one northbound lane of Highway 101 of Sonoma County.

The crews arrived at 9:45 a.m, having to clean up 10 tons of apples. The apples were all along the highway for about 200 to 300 feet on the pavement, as some of the fruit landed nearly 1,000 feet away along the shoulders and median strip. According to Ziese the apples had pilled up two feet high on the roadside. He simply said, “We’ve got applesauce all over the highway”.

In this accident no one was injured, only a motor home that was following behind the flatbed truck sustained minor damages. Urbins was given a citation that is likely to cost several hundreds dollars for the spilled load.

Profile

Growing up in Los Angeles, Michael Cissell had a dream to be successful in life. He wanted to do better than his family and through trials and tribulations he never gave up. As a graduate of Palisades Charter High School Michael worked extremely hard to get where he is today. Looking back at where he was and where he’s at now, Michael, a junior at San Jose State University developed a mind set that helped him get out of the ghetto, and placed him out on his own two feet.

When his life began as freshman in college he considered it to be hardest thing he has ever faced “I couldn’t let them down” as he refers to his family. “I needed a way out, this was just the opening passage, if failed there’s no point in return”. The expectations expected were through sheer determination and a sense of happiness, because those were the two important factors in achievement.

Not long after, Cissell became an active member in Kappa Alpha PSI fraternity, which enabled him to believe that if one can accomplish this, you can endure anything in life. By being in this fraternity, Cissell states that “being a Kappa helped me realize all the potential and creativity I’m capable of having”.

He started wrapping canes for himself and people began to recognize this skill he possessed and soon he began to wrap canes for other members as leisure in his spare time. Although wrapping canes wasn’t the only thing that Michael did as a member of the fraternity, but he also learned to not be afraid of performing in front of large crowds when it came time to “stroll”, and to “twirl”. “I let all inhibitions down and learned to be myself no matter what anyone thinks”.

Even though he joined this organization, it didn’t stop him or give him a lack in school work, he still got his work done and managed to maintain a “B” average each semester. During the fall semester of 2009, Michael decided to try something new. With no prior experience, he auditioned for the school play “The Colored Museum”.

He got the part, as “Walter- Lee- Bois-Jones”, and the “Kid”. “It was hard I’ll admit that, having to memorize so many lines became the struggle”, “I began to feel like I was the only one who kept messing up and after weeks of not getting it right I wanted to give up, but being that I was a huge asset to the play I didn’t want to leave the cast hanging”. So he continued on, but this time he went beyond and strived each and every day till the opening night. “Determination at times it takes sheer will to overcome adversity” He never gave up and when the opening night came some would have thought that he’s been doing this for a long time.

After dealing with many obstacles, Michael Cissell says “It’s living proof, that if I can do it anyone can”.

In this very rare accident no one was injured, only a motor home that was following behind the flatbed truck sustained minor damages. Unfortunately, Urbins was given a citation that is likely to cost several hundreds dollars for the spilled load.

The fire started in the kitchen and spread to the attic. According to Captain Rob Piper there wasn’t a smoke detector. When fire fighters rescued the man, he was surrounded by flames. At least 100 people were forced to leave the area, including neighborhood residents. Due to the rupture traffic was at a stand still. Businesses such as Wa-Ha-Ka restaurant lost about $ 500 worth of business in the shutdown, says manager, Samantha Feldman. “Ask my customers, they were pretty irate” said Carlann Lauria. A woman whose body was found at a public golf course last month died from accidental drowning, the San Mateo County coroner announced yesterday.

Jessica Smythe, 34, of Pacifica, was found in Sharp Park by a local hiker. According to San Mateo County coroner Robert Foster said there was nothing to indicate that Smythe's death was not accidental. He said her death was " consistent with fresh water drowning associated with probable hypthermia". Foster also added that she also had methamphetamines in her system at the time she died.

According to a San Jose Mercury News article, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death in East San Jose Thursday night around 7:00 p.m. The police received a call stating that two young 15, and 16, were involved in a stabbing on Kollmar Drive and Story Road. Both victims identity has yet to be released.

This past Thursday’s homicide was the second killing in the past week. Unfortunately the motive for the stabbing is not known, but the city’s police department is working to bring these boys families’ closure. In my opinion, we all need to be aware of our surroundings and our young ones. People take things such as life for granted by taking other people’s lives. We seem to lose our faith in one another and that’s why so many deaths have been happening day after day.

This story is very important because its about the surroundings of local residents of San Jose, Ca. Not only do they reside here, but these are people’s children being affected. In this story it has the news values of impact and proximity and also immediacy/timeliness and emotion/ human interest.

Top News Assignment # 3

Mayor Chuck Reed of San Jose, Ca called on city workers Thursday to accept a 10 to 15 percent cut in pay and benefits to help fill a $100 million budget hole. According to San Jose Mercury News article “Unions so far have balked at more modest proposals to cut workers' compensation, even though city leaders have said the alternative would be hundreds of layoffs”. Due to the global recession San Jose’s ninth consecutive shortfall exceeds what the city spends on libraries and parks combined.

Reed told the crowd of 1,400 at the McEnery Convention Center that employee cost which account for two thirds of the operating budget, have shot up 64 percent in the past nine years, while revenues have climbed just 18 percent. This news article affects the lives of many local San Jose residents. The idea of a loss in pay physically puts a drain on the lives of those who are less fortunate.

I personally feel for these workers because I would hate for it to happen to me. The workers shouldn’t have to pay for something that’s going on in the city that didn’t involve them, but due to the recession it’s making living in America harder each day. The families of these workers depend on their pay checks to get the bills paid. The decrease in wage will affect many. The news values in this story would be values of impact and proximity. It also has the news value of immediacy/timeliness and emotions/human interest.

After the crash, Rice tried to buy a six-pack of beer, but the cashier refused and instead called the police. Because of the state she was in, the store owner, Joe Awada, could not believe what he witnessed, saying, “I don’t know how she managed to walk”.

Due to a previous medical condition she was taken to the hospital for examination according to Lt. Han. She was then arrested for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence. She was released on a $ 15,000 bail, authorities said.

Fact # 1

A construction truck barreled down a hill into a crowded grocery store parking lot in San Mateo today at 1:15 due to a mechanical failure according to San Mateo police Captain Kevin Nguyen. The truck hit a black sport-utility vehicle broadside. The impact dragged the SUV about 75 feet into the parking lot. About eight or nine other vehicles were hit as well.

One person was killed on the scene and three others were injured. None of the victims or the truck’s driver have been identified yet. This crash left the parking lot in a mess of crushed vehicles and broken glass.

Fact # 2

A motorist driving down Highway 1 at Devil’s Slide drove off a 150-foot cliff. The 24-year-old was driving his Mazda Sedan in dense fog today at 4:10 a.m.
The San Francisco motorist was heading north toward San Francisco, when he missed his turn and drove over the side of the cliff.

Luckily, the car landed on its wheels. The man was wearing his seat belt, and only suffered minor head injuries. He used his cell phone to call 911.

Rescue crews with the California Highway Patrol and Cal Fire had trouble locating the man because of the fog. When they finally reached him, 45 minutes later, he was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for observation.

According to CHP Sgt. Trent Ross, “ He did what he was suppose to do; he wore his seat beat” said Ross, who added that if the driver hadn’t been wearing his seat belt during the accident “ there is no doubt it would have been fatal”.

The Fog Index

In today’s religious society it has been said that the clash between Christianity and Homosexuality has become a major problem. The question that seems to be unanswered is whether or not it is a sin to be homosexual. The way that the society views homosexuals, has become very uncomfortable for many people. The fact that degradation is being allowed worries me the most. Homosexual are normal human being who just favor the same sex and shouldn’t be punished for their likings. Unfortunately it isn’t that simple and they too have to face the horrible reality called life. Combining homosexuality with Christianity causes thorough examination and personal opinion. Through concise research I have found that the incongruence between the two will forever be unknown. Although there is said to be some hope in changing the ways churches and Christians handle their opposition towards homosexuals, I feel that peace will never be held due the beliefs that Christians hold.

After reading a New York Times article, I was very intrigued with what I read. The earthquake that hit Haiti a few weeks ago is continuing to grow extremely out of portion. The people of Haiti are suffering tremedously with not enough help and support to get them through this hardship being faced. Not only were homes taken away, but families were separated. Thousands of children have no home, no food to eat and not enough essentials to protect their health is available. Imagine, life with no running water, no clothes or shoes to protect the soles of our feet from broken glass and neddles, or not having a useful toilet to use the restroom in? Imagine 50 helpless children being crammed into two small bedrooms all using cardboard boxes to lay their heads on, can you vision the pain endured each and everyday? Its a horrible thought to encounter, but its an issue that need to be told.

The Foyer of Patience is where many of these children are orphanaged at. According to the article "They have no means to provide real schooling or basic medical care, so children spend their days engaged in mindless activities, and many die from treatable illnesses". Its very saddening to hear children spend days and nights living such as this. I wish there was something I could do to help make a difference in the lives of these kids who didnt ask for this to happen to them. Unfortuantely it has happened and we all have to find ways and solutions to make things better for their societies and families thats suffering.

In my opinion I feel that this story is newsworthy because it tocuhes many issues thats going on in the world today. It captures moments that shouldnt be avoided and neglected. This story affects everyone because it should prepare them in case an earthquake hit our country. Its not too long and establishes a compelling story to the readers in my opinion. The readers want to see themselves in the paper well I think if the envisioned themselves in Haiti its living proof that it can happen to anyone anywhere.
