Lead Excercise

Lead # 1

A small earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.2 hit Santa Clara County today around 8:33 this morning. According to U.S Geological Survey no injuries or damages reported, but the quakes epicenter was four miles deep and nine miles northwest of San Jose City Hall.


Highway 9 was closed yesterday from 7:30am til 4:00pm. Several trees had fallen unto the roadway overnight due to the wind and rain. Caltrans crews closed the road inorder to clear the street up.

Lead # 2

One of the most disasterous plane crashes in the past 3 years, killed all 131 passengers who were on board yesterday's flight right outside Pittsburg.

  1. Lead 1A: Pretty good, but it's a little long. See if you winnow it down a bit and fit the most important info into one sentence, not two. Also: the quake's epicenter ....

    Lead 1B: Again, you've got the right into in about the right order, but see if you can make it work as a single sentence. Also: 7:30 a.m., 4 p.m., "fallen onto (not "unto") the road in order (two words).

    Lead2: You're going in a good direction with this but it could use some more work. For example, it looks like you're opening with an introductory clause but it's not actually a clause.

    One possible redo: In one of the worst air crashes in years, all 131 people on board a US Air jet were killed yesterday when the plane crashed outside Pittsburgh while preparing to land.
